Veteran meets with teens who vandalised M'boro war memorial

A Fraser Coast ex-serviceman has spoken with a the young men involved in damaging a war memorial in Maryborough, saying it is something the teens greatly regret .
Former captain Jason Scanes said he was particularly impressed with the mother who had recognised the boys, including her own son, and told police, hoping to get them back on the right track.
The damage to the memorial, which happened last month, left the statue of Lieutenant Duncan Chapman damaged and the military trail story panels at the Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial smashed.
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Detective Chief Inspector, Gary Pettiford and the Maryborough Police in pursuing the vandalism to Maryborough s Queens Park Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial, Mr Scanes said. ....

ANGER, SADNESS: RSL President reacts to memorial vandalism

Maryborough RSL sub-branch President Paul Coleman has spoken out after the vandalism of Maryborough s Duncan Chapman memorial and Fraser Coast Military Trail.
The reaction is obviously one of anger but then when you think about it a bit more, it s also a feeling of sadness, that people are so ignorant of the sacrifice of servicemen and their families to make Australia what it is.
The third feeling I have is concern, to see people destroy things they see around the place. It is a concern, they so lack in moral standards that they can think they can smash things up. ....

It s a horrid act that has left Maryborough s military memorial in need of repairs.
The Duncan Chapman Memorial and Fraser Coast Military Trail have been vandalised leaving dents and scratches in the statue of Lieutenant Duncan Chapman and the military trail story panels smashed.
Councillor Paul Truscott said he was absolutely disgusted, at the vandalism.

It is a disgraceful low act to for someone to desecrate a war memorial â¦ to see this kind of disrespect towards such a memorial that honours those who have fallen, is disheartening.
I initially had seen it myself, the damage to the story boards â¦ the Council officers have quickly covered them so they can be repaired or replaced. ....
