Lewisburg prepares for holiday rainfall


LEWISBURG — Preparations for temperature shifts and rainfall followed this week’s snow removal effort in Lewisburg.
Bill Lowthert, Lewisburg Borough manager, said crews would be out again in the morning to clear remaining snow from streets usually cleaned on Thursday. Progress has been noted daily in the effort which Lowthert called successful.
“We tried to get as much of them cleared around cars as we possibly could,” Lowthert said. “So I suspect it will be a very brief time (Thursday) morning when we tried to pick up some of those streets like St. Louis where we weren’t able to get every spot.” ....

Union County awarded $300K grant for Hufnagle Park


LEWISBURG — Union County has been awarded a $300,000 grant to install a publicly accessible bathroom and hand washing facility at Hufnagle Park in Lewisburg.
Commissioner Chairman Preston Boop said the county is pleased with the grant award and noted that the restroom is needed at the park.
“The commissioners are pleased that Lewisburg Borough, working through SEDA-COG with the county s support, was awarded this grant,” Boop said.  The addition of public restrooms at Hufnagel Park is a needed and welcome enhancement of this downtown park that is enjoyed by residents and visitors of all ages.
The grant is from the Community Development Block Grant-CARES Act (CDBG-CV) funding to help communities address challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the first time the county has been awarded a competitive CDBG in a decade. ....

Emergency service board passes budget


LEWISBURG — Members of the Central Susquehanna Fire and Emergency Services (CSFES) board recently passed a 2021 budget.
The board’s projections for the William Cameron Engine Company (WCEC) included $2,045,307 in expenses versus $1,949,372 in revenue. Michael Derman, CSFES board chairman, noted a $90,934 projected shortfall.
Representatives of Lewisburg Borough, East Buffalo and Kelly townships, the three member municipalities, said securing a contract with West Chillisqauque Township the township could help close the shortfall. The task was noted as a big one for the months ahead.
Matt Schumacher, CSFES board member, added that 2020 census figures should show a population increase. Member contributions based on a rate per person could also help close the gap through population growth. ....
