Champion powerlifter donates sponsor funds to Metro Vancouver frontline workers

Vancouver-based gold medal powerlifting champion Sumeet Sharma has been spending some time out of the gym during the COVID-19 pandemic to pass on his appreciation for frontline workers.
Sharma was supposed to go to the Czech Republic for a powerlifting championship when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The competition was cancelled leaving Sharma with extra funds, which he decided to use to purchase food and supplies for healthcare workers, teachers and other frontline workers.

“We had a lot of family friends working in the healthcare system, and just hearing their stories of what healthcare workers had to go through during these tough times really touched myself, my parents, my wife… We really wanted to put our heads together and see what we could do as a family,” Sharma told Daily Hive in an interview. ....

Champion powerlifter bolsters strength of frontline workers through donations

Instead of bench pressing the weight of your average fully grown black bear, Sumeet Sharma has been lifting the spirits of frontline workers.
Sharma, a competitive powerlifter with several gold and silver medal finishes earned over his career already, was set to compete in the European Junior Powerlifting Championships last May until the coronavirus (COVID-19) dashed those plans. As the pandemic spread and put increasing pressure on frontline workers, Sharma would switch out lifting disks of iron for crates of water bottles and boxes full of food to donate to nurses across the Lower Mainland.
“I have a lot of family members and friends who work in hospitals, just hearing their stories about how healthcare workers working extremely hard during this pandemic really inspired me, my family, and my sponsors to give back to the healthcare workers,” Sharma wrote in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. ....

Sumeet Sharma couldn’t head to the Czech birthplace of Pilsner beer last year for the world powerlifting championships, but the B.C. corrections’ officer hopes to be in the Kazakhstan home of the wild apple this fall representing Canada.
In the meantime, he’s been tirelessly criss-crossing the Lower Mainland delivering refreshments and nourishment to front-line workers during COVID-19. That would include Indian fare, pizza, nutrition bars, coffee and bottled water, not beer from Pilsen, Czech Republic, or
Malus sieversii (the Central Asian apple that has grown for thousands of years near Almaty, Kazakhstan, home of this year’s planned world championships). ....
