Preventing mosquito-borne diseases one text at a time


 
The most common mosquito-borne diseases in the Northern Rivers are Ross River virus and Barmah Forrest Virus. They are not fatal, but they can cause serious illness and have long-term health impacts.
In 2020, the Northern NSW Local Health District reported 429 cases of Ross River virus. That is the second highest number of cases on record, up from an average of 135 cases a year over the last 30 years.
 
 
Ballina Shire Council s Environmental Health Officer, Kristy Bell, said the impacts of climate change and severe wet weather events are increasing the risks of mosquito-borne disease in our area.
Cases of Ross River virus disease are most commonly reported in late summer and early autumn, so it s important for the community to know what they can do to reduce risk, she said. ....

'Operational error' over Byron Shire's sewage surveillance program – Echonetdaily

An ‘operational error’ has resulted in Byron Shire’s sewage surveillance results being unreported since the week ending December 5.
The tests are considered an addition to COVID-19 testing, as it only detects presence of the virus, including from those who have recovered.
Director North Coast Public Health, Paul Corben said in a statement, ‘Sewage testing is an extra COVID-19 surveillance mechanism in addition to testing of residents and visitors’.
‘Byron Bay is participating in the state’s sewage surveillance program; however, no results are available from the two Byron Shire testing locations since the week ending December 5. ....

Virus testing bungle leaves tourism haven in the dark


 
Byron s Nicqui Yazdi, a shire resident known for her work with the Local Drug Action Team and Byron Underage Drinking and Drug Initiative, spoke out on Facebook, describing the situation as an epic mess .
The revelation coincided with NSW announcing 10 new locally acquired cases on Thursday. Victoria announced it would close its border with NSW from 11:59pm on January 1 as it recorded its sixth active coronavirus case.

Ms Yazdi said: I sent out a number of emails yesterday (Wednesday) and called around trying to clarify the lack of current reports for more than a month now on sewage testing at the two Byron plants on the official NSW Health Covid Surveillance site, and I received an email response last night from Wayne Jones, the chief executive of the Northern NSW Local Health District. ....

Government officials render COVID-19 sewage samples useless by accidentally freezing them


Sewage samples from Byron Bay were mistakenly froze instead of refrigerated
The specimens were collected by council workers to be tested for COVID-19
They were sent to a NSW Health lab where staff discovered they were useless
