The Chief Executive of Louth County Coucil has defended her officials handling of the latest failed funding application for the Port Access/Northern Cross Route in Drogheda.
At the local authority s monthly meeting this morning, Joan Martin said her staff had done an excellent job and claimed that both the Minister and Secretary General of the Department of Local Government had thought the application was very good.
She added that it s not her fault if those assessing the application, don t see it as a perfect fit for the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund scheme. ....

Anger over port route funding snub

The latest round of funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) has again sidestepped the Northern Cross Route, a much awaited road development on Drogheda s northside.
The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O Brien, announced €35.1 million in funding for three regeneration projects in the North-East region on Monday. The Louth one was the St. Nicholas Quarter and Backlands Regeneration in Dundalk which received €7.49 million.
I understand there will be some disappointment in terms of projects which were unsuccessful and my Department will engage with Local Authorities and provide feedback in respect of unsuccessful proposals, he said. ....

Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd, has stated that there is a viable route forward for the Northern Cross Route project following the news of the application’s appalling score in the latest round of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund.

Deputy O’Dowd said: “Having reviewed the application, it is quite clear that officials have determined that there are serious and inherent weaknesses in the application.

“Serious concerns on value for money, strategic alignment to the NDP and climate change have all been highlighted. Officials outlined that the project did not even meet the core objectives of the fund itself. ....
