Favorable climatic conditions characterised by above and near-average rainfall between March and May is expected to result in above-average 2021 B Season crop production from June to August at the national level. Above-average rainfall, however, led to localized flooding in April along Lake Tanganyika and the Rusizi River, destroying crops and displacing around 45,000 people in Bujumbura Rural and Rumonge provinces.
Staple food prices remained stable in April and May, the lead up to the harvest period. Maize, bean, and sweet potato prices decreased five to 10 percent between March and April 2021 but remained 10 to 25 percent higher than five-year average levels. Food prices will start to seasonally decrease from June to August, improving food access in general. ....

According to NOAA, USGS, and ICPAC seasonal forecasts, cumulative rainfall during the February-April main rainy season in Burundi is most likely to be average, with localized below and above-average rainfall. National average rainfall is expected to result in near-average national 2021 Season B crop production, whereas localized above and below-average rainfall will negatively affect 2021 Season B bean production, which is sensitive to moisture shocks.
Increased supply from 2021 Season A harvests eased prices from December to January, sweet potato, bean, and maize prices decreased 36, 22, and 11 percent, respectively, increasing food access. Due to localized below-average Season A bean production, however, bean prices in the Northern Lowland livelihood zone decreased to a lesser degree than previous years. Bean prices are expected to rise rapidly in March following household stock exhaustion. ....

Delayed and below-average rainfall has affected low altitude areas of the country, particularly the Northern Lowlands (northern Kirundo and Muyinga provinces). The latest multisector rapid assessment showed that 17% of households surveyed (about 36,400 households) in the Northern Lowlands had more than 50% of their crops destroyed by dryness. Due to dry conditions, combined with above-average food prices and decreased income sources related to COVID-19 restrictions, the area is expected to continue to face Stressed (IPC Phase 2) food security outcomes until May. Some poor and very poor households will face Crisis (IPC Phase 3). Households depending on agriculture as main source of income (90% of the Burundi population) are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity and loss of livelihoods. ....
