Almost 70% of peat bogs located along western seaboard

Almost 70% of peat bogs were in the western counties of Donegal, Kerry, Galway and Mayo in 2018, according to the latest data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The CSO has published its ‘Ecosystem Accounts – Peatlands and Heathlands 2018’ document.
The data collection office has said that ecosystem accounting aims to provide a “coherent and harmonised understanding of ecosystems and their relationships to the economy and the overall beneficiaries of ecosystem goods and services”.

The data relating to 2018 shows that almost
70% of peat bogs were in the western counties of Donegal, Kerry, Galway and Mayo, while almost 70% of moors and heathlands were in Cork, Donegal, Kerry and Wicklow. ....

The Hancock County Board of Supervisors will meet on Monday with the pressing issue regarding carpet installation and when the office movers will arrive. The county courthouse is undergoing a remodeling at taxpayer expense to improve all offices, work on basement bathrooms, and fix building issues .
The board will hear from Hancock County Engineer Jeremy Purvis concerning the current state of secondary roads. He will discuss the need for bidders on specific projects and review current ones. He will also discuss the need for new windows in the Engineering Offices downstairs.
Drainage will consist of initial plans for Drainage District 1 and 2’s South Main. They will look into setting a date for the opening of bids and awarding of a contract. ....

The Worth County Board of Supervisors will meet on Monday with a discussion on the current state of secondary roads. Richard Brumm, the Worth County Engineer will cover what work has already been done regarding grading, pot hole patching, and possible resurfacing of the roads. He will also cover any future projects this spring.
Julie Kuntz and Eliot Evans will hold a discussion with the board beginning at 8:45am regarding a possible moratorium on wind energy construction. Concerns have been raised about the need for further construction in the county. As a result of these and other reasons which will be addressed, the board will consider Resolution #2021.04.05 which is a temporary moratorium on commercial wind energy construction. ....

The level of the River Barrow has risen sharply at an important measuring point near Mountmellick which can warn of potential flooding.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) monitors river levels in realtime on rivers around Ireland. It launched a specific levels monitoring system for Mountmellick in the wake of the 2017 floods.
The latest data at the Borness measuring location shows that the Barrow rose from a level of almost 0.7 metres at 1.45 am on Tuesday morning February 23 to nearly 1.8 metres at 4.45 pm on Tuesday evening.
The river has not risen to flood level but the rapid increase in the level is of concern. ....
