Electricity Act 1999 should be amended to curb power theft

Summary
The Act does not provide stringent punishments to culprits of power theft or vandalism to equipment from the network, despite the huge losses the habits cause to the company and the country at large.

On Friday April 9, Daily Monitor reported that power distributor Umeme lost Shs98b to power theft in Jinja Sub-region between January and March and that such loss is greatly attributed to the outdated Electricity Act 1999.
As much as the Judiciary created a Utilities, Standards and Wildlife Court to prosecute culprits involved in stealing of utilities such as power,  the Electricity Act prescribes very weak punishment for culprits. ....

UWA hails judiciary for sentencing wildlife offenders

 Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has applauded the judiciary for taking patriotic actions and handing punitive sentences to wildlife offenders.
Samuel Emanu a police officer formerly attached to the Police Canine Unit and Levy Eliu a civilian were sentenced by Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Buganda Miriam Ayo who is also caretaker for the Wildlife Court after they pleaded guilty to the charges of unlawful possession of protected species.
The duo was arrested on March 17, by officers of the Special Wildlife Crime Unit with two elephant tusks weighing 45kgs in Obalang, Amuria District.
UWA communications manager Bashir Hangi says such punitive sentences will help deter others from getting involved in wildlife crimes. ....
