Kota Kinabalu: A 48-year-old woman who kept a live Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus), a totally protected animal, for four years was on Monday fined RM15,000 or four months jail for failing to hand over the animal to the authority two years ago.

Indonesian man gets four years jail for killing elephant in Tawau district

KOTA KINABALU: An Indonesian man faces a four-year jail sentence for killing an endangered Borneo pygmy elephant in 2019 in Sabah s Tawau district.
In handing down the sentence, Tawau Sessions Court judge Awang Kerisnada Mahmud ordered that the sentence of 46-year-old Martin Alok run from the date of his remand on Oct 14, 2019.
The sentencing on Wednesday (July 14) comes after Martin pleaded guilty on Tuesday (July 13) to the offence under Section 41(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 for possession of a fully protected animal and its body parts.
In handing down the sentence to the unrepresented Martin, Awang ordered for Martin to be handed over the Immigration Department for deportation at the end of his jail sentence. ....

Sun bear cub released into wild after being caught in snare

ALOR SETAR: A sun bear cub found in a homemade snare in an oil palm plantation in Padang Terap, some 50km from here, has been released back into the wild.
Kedah Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Jamalun Nasir Ibrahim said the bear was rescued from the trap on Saturday evening (July 10) and released into its natural habitat at around 9am on Sunday (July 11).
The rescued sun bear is a cub aged about three to four years, he told the media after the bear s release.
It did not sustain any injuries and was not trapped for too long. The bear can survive on its own now, and is not dependent on its mother, he said. ....
