Growing up in Bay of Plenty, I’ve always been fascinated by the whale-like double-humped landmark on the near horizon.
I’ve decided. I’m going to jump.
A seal slides nose-first off a rock with a soft plunk into the ocean and the dark shape of a ray glides close to shore. The idea of swimming with the abundant wildlife off Moutohorā (Whale Island) is just too good an opportunity to pass up. Even if it is a good five metres away and paying absolutely no attention to us.
The water is sparkling jewel-like and is an eye-achingly beautiful shade of aquamarine. The shock of the cold water when I jump off the catamaran tops off a day of pure magic. ....
