Tens of thousands of older people who need help to stay at home will miss out because a budget funding increase is $1.4 billion short of what is required.
The revelation came as aged care providers, nurses and pensioners welcomed the record $17.7 billion funding injection for aged care but agreed it was not enough to fix the neglect of our elderly.
A detailed analysis by the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association reveals the 100,000-long waiting list for home care packages won t be eliminated by extra funding in the budget.
The government s own data shows in December there were 96,859 people waiting for a home care package but the budget will fund only 40,000 new places next financial year and a further 40,000 places from July 2022. ....

Catholic health australia welcomes aged care package - legacy defining moment

Catholic Health Australia
Catholic Health Australia has welcomed the Federal Government’s formal response to the Royal Commission in Aged Care calling the $17.7 billion package a landmark moment for older Australians.
CHA is part of the Australian Aged Care Collaboration (AACC), which represents more than 1,000 providers, which tonight congratulates the Government on accepting 126 of the Royal Commission’s 148 recommendations.
After 20 government reviews in 20 years, this Budget, and the government’s response to the Royal Commission’s recommendations, finally addressed many of the challenges facing aged care.
CHA said the suite of measures will enable more Australians to be cared for in their home, increase the number of care minutes and provide more training for carers and the incentives for them to stay. ....

Aged care advocates warn that a touted $18 billion injection for the sector will go to waste unless it is accompanied by systemic reform that weeds out poor-performing operators and unlocks more home care packages.
With the Morrison government using the budget to respond to the aged care royal commission, Finance Minister Simon Birmingham declined to confirm a report that it would boost spending by $17.7 billion over four years, but promised a “once in a generation investment”.
Council on the Ageing chief Ian Yates says billions in extra funding promised for aged care needs to be accompanied by reform.  ....

Boosting aged care workforce key to fixing the system

Aged care experts say boosting staff numbers is the key to reducing waiting times for in-home care for the elderly and improving services and employee satisfaction across the sector, but funding alone isn’t the answer.
“There are many ingredients to fixing the system but until you get the workforce right you’re not going to fix it completely,” Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation federal secretary Annie Butler said. “It’s the cornerstone.”

More than 96,000 people were still on a waiting list for their approved home care package as of December, Senate estimates heard last month. It’s a slight drop from the almost 100,000 who were on a waitlist in September. In the past 2½ years, 27,278 Australians have died while waiting for their approved package. ....
