Only 8 per cent of rental tax is collected, which leaves the larger majority of rental income untax, according to Ms Jaye Connolly-LaBelle, the RippleNami chairperson and chief executive officer.
 Speaking during the Tax Forum CEO Breakfast meeting in Kampala, Ms Connolly-LaBelle, said about 92 per cent of rental income is not taxed, which denies government close to Shs710b.
Ms Connolly-LaBelle, whose company signed a contract with government last year to develop technology through which collection of rental tax can be maximised, did not explain how she had arrived at the figure. ....

Summary
On May 11, the 10th Parliament was dissolved after a five-year term that commenced in May 2016. The disbandment of the House paved way for the MPs-elect swearing-in this week, which ran from May 17 to 20.
This will be followed by the election of Speaker and Deputy on May 20 at Kololo. As the 11th Parliament commences, Esther Oluka looks back at the performance of the previous House.

On May 11, Speaker of 10th Parliament Rebecca Kadaga ended business of the House after a long day’s plenary. 
“I want to assure Honourable Members and citizens (that) a motion will be moved in the second sitting of the new (11th) Parliament to reinstate business which has not been completed and under Rule 325 of the Rules of Procedure, this business must be handled in the first session of Parliament,” Ms Kadaga told MPs in her concluding remarks.  ....

Property owners and tenants are up in arms against lawmakers for imposing 25 per cent rental income tax, effective July 1.
Dozens of landlords and tenants interviewed accused members of the 10th Parliament, whose term expires next week, of not consulting them as voters and real estate stakeholders.
The new levy is likely to result in increased rent as property owners will pass the cost onto tenants, who will desert commercial and residential buildings. ....
