ISLAMABAD:
Minister for Finance and Revenue Abdul Hafeez Shaikh reiterated the government’s commitment towards promoting agriculture sector through effective and speedy implementation of the Agriculture Transformation Plan as approved by the prime minister.
To execute the plan, the minister constituted a five-member committee comprising Law and Justice Division secretary, National Food Security and Research secretary, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) governor and other senior officials of relevant institutions and ministries.
Shaikh’s comments came during a meeting to review progress on Agriculture Transformation Plan on Monday.
The meeting also reviewed the progress on the directions of the Prime Minister to enhance agriculture credit for the farming sector. ....

Govt to set up Tax Policy Unit

The PTI government has approved the establishment of an independent Tax Policy Unit (TPU) with the objective of improving taxation governance, as it would point out revenue leakages in the system, recommend rationalising rate of taxes and suggest measures to mobilise higher revenue in tax collections.
The creation of TPU would partially withdraw the powers of policy making for taxation from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), but improve its function to collect revenue in taxes in the country. ....

CCoE Approves Allocation Of Pipeline Capacity to New LNG Terminals
A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCOE) was held under the Chairmanship of the Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar here in Islamabad on Monday.
The CCOE in its meeting approved the Report of the sub-committee constituted by the CCOE vide its decision dated 18th January 2021 regarding the allocation of pipeline capacity to new LNG Terminals, with an aim to encourage investment and provide a level playing field to the LNG terminals.
The Power Division submitted the summary on Payment Mechanism and Agreement with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The summary was based on the output of the implementation committee that was constituted to convert the MoUs with the IPPs into legally binding agreements. ....

Wheat, egg prices come down in local market
Finance secretary praised coordinated efforts of provincial governments

Prices of wheat and eggs have decreased due to coordinated and consolidated efforts of provincial governments, said Finance Secretary Kamran Afzal.
He was briefing the National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC), which met on Monday with Minister of Finance and Revenue Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the chair to review the price trend of essential commodities, especially wheat, sugar, eggs and edible oil.
The finance minister directed the provincial governments and relevant departments to maintain the momentum of strict price monitoring for the provision of basic commodities at affordable prices across the country. ....

ISLAMABAD: Though the cabinet reshuffle may take some pressure off the government in light of the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) recent judgement stating that unelected advisers cannot hold executive responsibilities, the working of important official functionaries remains clouded in uncertainty.
IHC Justice Aamer Farooq, on a petition filed by PML-N lawmaker Rana Iradat Sharif, had ruled that advisers and special assistants could assist and advise the prime minister on their respective subjects but not intervene in the executive’s domain. ....
