Just days after
Anthony Van Dyck in last year’s
Melbourne Cup, a horse has perished at the
Warrnambool May carnival.
Fulmineus, an 11-year-old longshot, was euthanised after suffering serious injury in a fall in today’s 3450m steeplechase.
Two horses fell in the race but the other,
Ascot Red, was uninjured.
Fulmineus had returned from a 10-month injury lay-off in a flat race at Terang in March but hadn’t contested a steeplechase since running seventh in last year’s Grand Annual at Warrnambool. ....

When jumps horses were dropping like flies a decade ago, prompting
Racing Victoria boss Rob Hines to conduct a crisis meeting in the
Warrnambool steward’s room on
Grand Annual Day, racing was confronted with a couple of unimaginables.
The three days of the
2009 May racing carnival were the darkest in jumps racing history. Six jumpers had perished in 14 days. Twelve had died in 12 months and three in three days at the Bool.
Hines declared “that’s it!” and suspended the sport after popular South Australian horse ....

The
36,000 attendees over the three-days, a return to near-normality and a guaranteed
$14 million cash-injection to the
City of Warrnambool.
Warrnambool Racing Club chief executive
Tom O’Connor said this morning that state government approval came through on Friday for up to
12,000 per day through the carnival.
Crowd-wise, last year’s carnival was a ghost meet because of
COVID and cost the club over
$600,000 and the city
$13.9 million in lost tourism
revenue.
WRC chief executive
Tom O’Connor said “there’s a fair bit of excitement now” after weeks of speculation regarding crowd capacity both from the club and fans who have held back booking accommodation until the increased crowd capacity was confirmed. ....
