Sales pitch for 'expired' gallery | Dandenong Star Journal

The first steps for the sell-off of Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre have formally started.
City of Greater Dandenong will open public submissions on its desire to sell the 1000-square-metre block at 1-9 Walker Street, Dandenong.
The public art and open space at the site’s northern side would be retained by the council.
It makes way for a contemporary gallery housed in a refurbished ex-Masonic Lodge in nearby Mason Street.
The council has provisionally dubbed the new venue ‘Dandenong New Art’.
A ‘special committee’ of mayor Angela Long and councillors Jim Memeti and Bob Milkovic will hear and report on the public submissions. ....

The proposed sale of the Walker Street Gallery by Greater Dandenong Council is short-sighted.
It shows a lack of vision and I will continue to fight against it on the outside as I did for eight years on the inside as a Councillor.
The former City of Dandenong purchased the building in 1988, converting the old Dandenong Fire Station and converting it to create the Fire Station Community Arts Centre and Gallery.
Over the years it morphed into the Walker Street Gallery but the community arts component was still there, most recently with Connections Art Space as tenants.
The issue was lack of space – there wasn’t enough space for a both a professional arts gallery and a community arts centre. ....

Libraries, art venues re-open | Dandenong Star Journal

Greater Dandenong libraries have re-opened under eased Covid restrictions from Friday 25 June.
Density limits will however apply in the libraries as well as at the re-opened Drum Theatre.
On 29 June, Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre will also open its doors with two new exhibitions Invisibility and Gone To Carolina In My Mind.
Masks and visitor check-ins are required in the venues.
Under the eased Covid restrictions, up to 15 people can visit your home a day. Hospital and care-facility patients can have up to two visitors at a time and five a day.
Up to 300 people can attend weddings and funerals, as well as indoor recreational spaces, bars and restaurants – subject to density limits. ....

After nearly a year in ZOOM hibernation, there’s nothing like performing in front of a live audience.
Even face-to-face rehearsals have been refreshing for Dandenong singer-dancer Samrakshana Ram – who is taking part in the Earth Matters walking tour in Dandenong this month.
“To sit with other artists and work with them – and to not be on social media or ZOOM as we’ve lately adapted to – it was very refreshing.
“Until you’re there, you don’t realise how much you have missed it.”
Audiences also feeding on a menu of online concerts during Covid have a “crazy” pent-up hunger for live events, she says. ....
