Crossing a range gives trampers a sense of achievement. But it takes planning.
That is what happened this month when the Wanganui Tramping Club ran a five-day crossing of the Ruahine Range, aiming to follow the path of Anglican missionary William Colenso, who was the first European to cross the range in 1847. ....

The Wanganui Tramping Club was founded in 1952 and, unsurprisingly, few of the original members are still active. Though the membership is generally middle-aged or older, it is encouraging to see a crop of youngsters coming out on trips.
Eight children took part in a recent day trip to the club s Mangaturuturu Hut in Tongariro National Park, and there were six on another on a day walk to Egmont National Park. On the latter trip someone did the maths and noted that there was a gap of 69 years between the oldest and youngest walkers. ....

Tongariro National Park has the lion s share of tramps on the Wanganui Tramping Club s calendar for February.
Members will spend four days in a ski lodge which they will use as a base for day trips around Mt Ruapehu.
There will be a one-day crossing of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a trip which is taken often but is always popular. As well, members will spend a weekend on their annual visit to the south-eastern slopes of the mountain to remove wilding pines a conservation project with which they have been involved since 1965. ....
