High dose of steroids in treatment of Covid is leading to avascular necrosis or bone death which in turn is pushing patients to go for hip treatment or hip replacements.
Patients in the age group of 40 to 60 years are approaching orthopaedic doctors with complaint of hip pain.
“In last month, I got 20 new patients with the complaint of hip pain. All had steroid history. We first treat them with medicines and if the problem persists, we suggest MRI to diagnose the stage of hip bone deformation. Based on that we take a decision on whether hips need to be replaced,” said Dr Bhavesh Sachde, a Rajkot-based joint replacement surgeon. ....

Short oxygen, drug supply keeps hospitals on tenterhooks | Rajkot News

Rajkot: Rajkot Civil Hospital and even private hospitals are continuing to operate amid anxiety owing to shortage in oxygen supply, resulting in many hospitals having to turn away new patients with oxygen requirements from its doorstep.
While the state government through a notification allowed all hospitals and nursing homes to start Covid facility without prior permission to solve the crisis for beds, there seem to be no takers because of the prevalent shortage.
According to Rajkot medical association (RMA) Rajkot’s requirement was 120 tonnes per day which increased to 200 tonnes per day with rise in number of patients especially severe cases requiring oxygen support. The only facilities at Shapar and Metoda that provide industrial oxygen is facing queue of hospital staff since the morning. The collector office had deputed Mamlatdar with police force to handle law and order situation. ....

Pvt hospitals gasp as supply of oxygen falls short | Rajkot News

Rajkot: For the past two days, Rajkot private hospitals had been facing short supply of oxygen resulting in a few hospitals declining to admit new patients on Wednesday. However, later the district administration assured the hospital administrations of restoring normal supply by evening.
Oxygen requirement in Rajkot’s Covid hospitals is around 90,000 kilo litre (KL) per day of which, around 40,000 KL is consumed by the civil hospital and Samras hostel alone. Around 900 patients are being treated in these hospital facilities.
Dr Hiren Kothari, member of national working committee of Indian Medical Association (IMA) said, “We have been told that there is low supply from the agency where we are procuring oxygen. We had no option but to stop admitting newer patients as we have to first ensure that we can provide enough oxygen support to the existing patients.” ....
