After five years as chief of the Watsonville Police Department, David Honda says he will retire July 1st. Assistant Chief Thomas Sims will step into the chief’s role on an interim basis while the search for Honda’s permanent replacement is underway.
In an open letter to the community on Thursday, five years to the month since he became chief, Honda said would leave the 86-member department “with mixed emotions.”

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Friday marked the eighth anniversary of the date that Santa Cruz Police Sgt. Loran "Butch" Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler laid their lives down for their community.
A public memorial was slated to take place in the Santa Cruz Police Department Baker-Butler Memorial Garden, in front of the police station, at 3:23 p.m. — the minute they lost their lives.
Baker and Butler were fatally shot by a sex assault suspect they had gone to interview. The garden was dedicated on the first anniversary of the shooting.

California education news: What's the latest?

Link copied.New law would help students who fell behind academically during pandemic
California may make it easier for parents to request that their children be held back a grade level next school year or have letter grades earned this school year changed to a “pass” or “don’t pass” score, which some colleges will be required to accept if Assembly Bill 104 becomes law.
The bill was introduced today by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, as a way to ensure that students aren’t punished for falling behind academically during the pandemic.
“The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated educational inequities in California’s school system at an unprecedented scale,” said Gonzalez in her author’s statement. “Mounting evidence indicates that our most vulnerable students lack the necessary academic, social emotional, and technological supports needed to be successful in distance learning, leaving them to fall behind and underperform.”

Watsonville police detectives are investigating three separate shootings that happened over the course of two days. The shootings left two people injured, including one person who suffered life-threatening injuries. According to police, the first shooting took place on the levee near Walker Street shortly after midnight. The victim, a 46-year-old man, was found near a campsite with at least two gunshot wounds. The second shooting took place hours later in the 300 block of Madison Street. No injuries were reported, but bullet holes were found in a home and nearby vehicles. The third shooting happened Monday at 2:07 a.m. on Tharp Avenue. Police say a 30-year-old man was inside a car when he was shot multiple times. "Based on evidence collected, Detectives do not believe any of these shootings are connected and are working to determine if any of them could be gang-related," said investigators in a statement to the press. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Salvador Mendoza at 831-768-3357 or their anonymous tip line at 831-768-3544.

A Wendy's employee was reportedly shot by a disgruntled customer over a dispute involving dipping sauce at a drive-thru in St. Louis.
The violence unfolded after a man is said to have ordered from the store on Natural Bridge Avenue near Union Boulevard around 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
The man asked for extra dipping sauce with his order and when he didn't get what he wanted, he shot into the restaurant, according to other workers and as reported by FOX2.
Two shots were fired, striking one 31-year-old employee in his lower back and arm, police told KMOV. The unidentified suspect then reportedly fled in a dark-colored Nissan.
