Simcoe Muskoka's COVID-19 death toll surges amid outbreaks

BARRIE, ONT.
The health unit reports a dip in the daily number of COVID-19 cases across Simcoe Muskoka on Wednesday, with 47 new infections, but the death toll continues to reach new heights.
The region s medical officer of health, Dr.Charles Gardner, says he is cautiously optimistic by the case numbers, but the rising death toll in the region is cause for concern.
We have had a very tragic large number of deaths occur over the past week, Gardner said.
This is certainly the greatest number of people who have passed away in a week in our history in Simcoe Muskoka from the pandemic, Gardner added. ....

188 new COVID-19 cases reported over the weekend in Simcoe Muskoka

BARRIE, ONT.
There was a spike in COVID-19 cases across Simcoe Muskoka over the weekend, with the health unit reporting 188 new infections, plus one new death.
The region s virus-related death toll climbed to 60 Monday after a Simcoe County man, 45 to 64, died over the weekend.
Georgian Bay General Hospital also reported a virus-related death, not yet listed by the health unit. The death comes as the Midland hospital continues to grapple to contain a COVID-19 outbreak. Some of the affected staff have now completed two weeks of isolation and returned to work.
Along with the hospital, there are outbreaks at five seniors homes. The recent outbreaks at Waterford Retirement Community in Barrie and the Bradford Valley Care Community have since ended. ....

44 new COVID-19 cases in Simcoe Muskoka and one new death

BARRIE, ONT.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reported 44 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, and one new virus-related death, bringing the region s death toll to 56.
Dr. Charles Gardner, SMDHU medical officer of health, said the latest victim is a man between 35 and 44 who died at the Muskoka Algonquin Health Centre.
His death marks the third virus-related passing in the region in the last week. On Monday, a man in his 80s died at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston and on Thursday, a woman, 65 to 79, died at Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland.
According to Gardner, 13 people are in the hospital with the virus, all in Simcoe County, five of whom are in the intensive care unit. ....
