$320K theft from Wattsburg schools, in Erie County, nets state prison

Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri blamed the thefts on a gambling habit.
He said the defendant, Rebecca A. Leone, 36, crafted a sophisticated plan to take the money by writing school district checks to herself and then went out to play the slots at the casino, referring to Presque Isle Downs & Casino in Summit Township.
She gambled it away, Daneri said at Leone s sentencing on Friday.
He also called her a sociopath because of how much she stole and the lengths she went to carry out the crimes for so long.
The prosecution s points prevailed.
Erie County Judge John J. Mead followed Daneri s recommendation and sentenced Leone to state prison. Mead gave her two to 13 years. ....

Some Erie County schools are open, most are remote-only

As COVID-19 cases in Erie County continue to increase, so does the number of local schools switching to remote-only learning as a result.
Here s a look at which schools are closed for in-person instruction and which are open, based on information available Friday afternoon:
• The Erie School District, the region s largest school district with 11,000 students, will continue remote learning for middle and high school students into early 2021.
The district s elementary school students are also learning remotely, at least through the end of December. Elementary students could resume in-person classes, with hybrid instruction, once the number of COVID-19 cases in Erie County declines to levels the district administration and Erie School Board consider acceptable under state guidelines. ....
