Article content Many historians often imply the northeastern part of this province was only an untamed wilderness until the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway began to build northward from North Bay, followed by the discovery of silver in Cobalt in 1903. History tells a different story. Before the railway, there was water transport. There was a 100-year-old Hudson’s Bay Post on Lake Temiskaming at the mouth of the Matabitchuan River. There were also many Indigenous sites dotting the shoreline or on islands of the massive lake, as well as the French village of Ville Marie, Que., which at the time, was the largest settlement on the lake. ....
