Karnataka stalls Kerala's proposal to develop Thalassery- Wayanad-Mysuru rail line

Citing an adverse report from its Forest Department, the Karnataka government has stalled the ambitious proposal of the Kerala government to develop the Thalassery- Wayanad-Mysuru rail line under Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (K-Rail), a joint venture company under the Kerala Government and Ministry of Railways.

The Hindu that the Karnataka government had pointed out that the ₹5,000 crore project involving the construction of a lengthy tunnel across Kabani river to save wildlife tracts of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarhole National Park was not feasible.
Apart from the rich biodiversity rich corridor between Nagerhole and Bandipur National Parks being harmfully impacted , the sources said that the Karnataka Forest Department had also specified that even if the rail line is constructed through underground tunnels , it can affect t ....

Widespread damage to crops has been reported in heavy summer rain and wind that have been lashing the district for the past several days. The crop loss has been estimated at ₹51.86 crore, according to preliminary reports of the Agriculture Department.
The rain severely affected crops, especially plantains, vegetables, coffee, pepper vines, rubber, arecanut palms and coconut palms in Panamaram, Cheeral, Edavaka, Thariyode, Kottathara, Padinharethara, Thavinhal, Vellamunda, Muttil, Noolpuzha and Poothadi grama panchayats, said Sajimon, Principal A ....

A recent study on dhole or Asiatic wild dog, an endangered large carnivore, has found that the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WSS), a major habitat of elephants and tigers, is also host to a good number of dholes.
The first ever study on the carnivore organised by the Wildlife Conservation Society–India, National Centre for Biological Sciences, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, University of Florida, and Stanford University has found that the sanctuary has close to 50 dholes. ....
