I am partially passionate for a good ole cowboy movie, so I took myself off to the Warkworth Rodeo last month where I had a fabulous day and learnt many new things. Of course, all the usual suspects were there, including those from the farming fraternity that I do not see often enough, rural dwellers and a heap of our urban cousins. Previously, I had bumped into my editor with the ridiculous proposal of riding a bull in the novice section. Although he and others may have found this mildly amusing to watch, my sensible side got the better of me, so I jammed my “lightbulb moment” back into my imagination. ....

For the sixth year in a row, animal rights activists will protest outside the Warkworth Rodeo on New Year s Day.
Around 100 protestors are expected to gather outside the Warkworth Showgrounds, calling for an end to the controversial sport.
We want a total ban on rodeos across the country, Direct Animal Action spokesperson Apollo Taito told Newshub.
At least a start would be for the Labour Government to meet its pre-election promises from 2017, at least a ban on the worst aspects of rodeo - the use of flank straps, the use of electric prodding, that inherently make rodeo a very cruel and abusive event. ....

Anti-rodeo protesters will gather outside the Warkworth Rodeo on New Year’s Day for the sixth year in a row.
Animal advocacy organisation Direct Animal Action (DAA) are coordinating the protest and expect up to 100 people to attend.
Warkworth Rodeo is held at the Auckland Council-owned Warkworth Showgrounds and the Rodney Local Board decides who gets to lease the land.
The Rodney Local Board is the last local board in Auckland which continues to give approval for rodeo events to take place on council-owned land.
In October representatives from DAA presented a 5000 signature petition to the Rodney Local Board calling on them to stop all rodeo events on council-owned land under their management. ....
