Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday said his government’s “war on drugs” was a “committed mission” and nobody could derail it with “unfounded” criticisms and politically-motivated instigations.
Singh said this while destroying pre-trial drugs and psychotropic substances worth over Rs 34 crore in the international market at Pungdongbam Chingmang in Imphal East District in the presence of ministers, MLAs, high-ranking police officers, mediapersons, villagers and local leaders. These drugs were seized by Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) and Manipur police, the chief minister’s office said. ....

Manipur cop returns gallantry award


A senior police official from Manipur on Friday returned the gallantry medal conferred by the BJP-led state government after a special court acquitted seven accused, including a former district council chief, in a drug haul case probed by her in 2018, prompting several student and civil society organisations to demand reinvestigation of the case.
Additional SP Thounaojam Brinda in a letter to chief minister N. Biren Singh on Friday said since all the accused were acquitted by the Special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (ND&PS) court on Thursday because the “investigation and prosecution have been deemed unsatisfactory” by the court, she does “not consider myself deserving of the honour” bestowed on her by the chief minister. ....

New Delhi: Manipur Police officer Thounaojam Brinda, who had in July locked horns with the state chief minister N. Biren Singh by alleging in a court document that she was under ‘pressure’ from him to release from custody a ‘drug lord’, has returned the state’s Police Medal for Gallantry.
The award was granted to her by the BJP chief minister in 2018 on the occasion of Patriots Day in recognition of her continued effort against the smuggling and sale of drugs in the border state and was also promoted to the post of additional superintendent. She was the first officer from the state’s Narcotics and Affairs of Border ....

A special court in Manipur on Thursday acquitted former ADC chairman of Chandel Lhukhosei Zou and six others in connection with a 2018 drug seizure case and ordered them to be released from jail.
The former ADC chairman was arrested along with seven others by a team of Narcotic and Affairs of Border (NAB) police and Imphal West Police on June 20, 2018. During the raid, the sleuths allegedly seized drugs worth over Rs 27 crore in the international market. ....
