Monroe County moves forward on Key West senior living facility

The Monroe County Commission agreed Wednesday to fund a $12,000 feasibility study, which would help the county determine whether to proceed partnering with the City of Key West and the Key West Housing Authority on managing the Poinciana Gardens senior assisted living facility.
The commission has spent nearly $13,000 so far on consultant Robin Bleier’s firm to review the contracts, finances and business plans for the struggling 106-unit senior facility, which is currently only about half-full and has been through two management companies since it opened in 2018.
On Wednesday, Bleier briefed the commission on the facility and its finances. ROB O’NEAL/The Citizen  {span}Key West City officials postponed a decision Wednesday to accept a grant to rebuild the T-pier at Mallory Square. Some residents are worried a new T-pier will allow more large ships, like this one in 2004, to dock there. {/span} While not formally voting on whether to accept a federal grant to rebuild and expand the ship docking pier at Mallory Square, Key West City Commissioners promised to adhere to the cruise ship limits imposed by last November’s referendum. The commission agreed to postpone a vote on the matter until its next meeting, June 2. However, several commissioners were leaning toward accepting the $521,835 grant, which will require the city to add a $174,000 match for its 25% share of the phased construction project. ....

Key West City Commission acts on several big issues

Key West City Commissioners made up for lost time at their rescheduled meeting Wednesday, taking action on several controversial issues including voting not to add two members to the Key West Housing Authority.
Commissioners also accepted a 50% settlement with outgoing City Manager Greg Veliz for unused vacation and sick leave above a capped limit and set Friday, April 16, as his last day. And City Attorney Shawn Smith said a resolution to fire Reimagine Duval project consultant KCI Technologies would be on the commission’s Tuesday, April 13, meeting agenda.
The attempt to add two members to the long-time, five-member Key West Housing Authority board of commissioners was defeated by a 5-2 vote, with Mayor Johnston and Commissioner Sam Kaufman voting to expand the board. The majority of the 20 speakers at the meeting also wanted to add two new members. In addition to poor conditions at some of the KWHA-managed low-income housing complexes in Key West, a new KWHA senior ....
