David Siegel, MD, MPH, is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist and a Lieutenant Commander in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. He joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) from 2016 to 2018 and remained in DCPC as a medical officer. A voltage is applied across the semiconductor. When a photon hits the detector, its absorbed energy kicks an electron off an atom in the semiconductor – the same photoelectric effect that generates electricity in solar panels.
That loose electron is accelerated by the applied voltage and causes a sort of chain reaction in which large numbers of adjacent atoms release an “avalanche” of electrons just as a small added stress can prompt an entire mountainside of snow to collapse. That avalanche current is the output signal. Finally, the device is reset by quenching the current with a counter-voltage and restoring the initial applied voltage. Because the avalanche involves such a large number of electrons, getting the entire system back to a quiet state where it is ready to detect another photon is challenging. ....

Singapore A nuclear-powered ship full of scientists, activists and billionaires sailing the world and examining the state of the oceans. That is the dream of entrepreneur Aaron Olivera, who believes the novel vessel will help raise environmental awareness.
The ship, called Earth 300, was designed by superyacht specialist Ivan Salas Jefferson. Almost 300m long and 60m high, it will be able to accommodate 425 people. Most of those will be staff, scientists and students, travelling for free. A handful of wealthy tourists, housed in luxury suites, will pay $3m each for a 10-day journey helping to make the venture profitable. ....

Tehran government officials said a suspicious Sunday blackout at a major uranium enrichment facility is nuclear terrorism, likely orchestrated by foreign actors seeking to disrupt Iran s controversial nuclear program.
Iranian officials lashed out after a desperate move caused the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran to have an electrical blackout. Civilian nuclear program workers said the accident suddenly disrupted the plant s electrical distribution grid.
Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, stopped short of accusing any specific country for the likely cyberattack, but vowed to beef up the country s nuclear program despite ongoing Western efforts to reach a denuclearization deal. ....
