The shooting of a bystander during a student protest in Braamfontein on Wednesday was “unnecessary”, deputy higher education minister Buti Manamela said.
The incident formed part of parliament s higher education portfolio committee meeting on Wednesday, with MPs lamenting what had happened.
“We have received the news [of the shooting]. We are trying to find more information so that we extend our condolences to the family. This is quite unfortunate, and obviously unnecessary. We do not encourage or condone situations wherein during protest there is loss of life,” Manamela said. ....

Johannesburg: One person was killed on Wednesday after police fired rubber bullets to disperse a group of protesters at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, a student leader said.
The students are demanding that those who owe the university up to 150,000 rand ($ 9,850) in fees still be allowed to register for the new academic year.
The cost of university education, prohibitive for many Black students, has become a symbol of the inequalities that endure in South Africa more than two decades after the end of apartheid. ....

A man died during violent clashes between the police and protesting Wits University students in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said paramedics responded to a shooting just after 10am.
“The man went to a doctor’s room and as he came out, the police apparently fired rubber bullets to disperse protesting Wits students. ....

A man died during violent clashes between the police and protesting Wits University students in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

The man appeared to have been struck by rubber bullets as he exited a clinic in Braamfontein.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said the man was struck twice as he left the building and died at the scene.
Wits student Bongani Makhanya, who was close to the scene at the time, said the police had opened fire at students “without warning”. ....
