Local health unit supports mandatory immunization of LTC workers

WINDSOR, ONT.
Employees working at long term care and retirement homes will be expected to get their COVID-19 vaccine starting July 1.
“It is the right thing to do,” says WECHU’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “We are hoping most, if not all, will get their vaccine and keep these facilities safe for everyone.”
Ahmed could not provide the number of workers who have been vaccinated in Windsor-Essex as the mandatory implementation is being spearheaded by the province s Ministry of Health.
“We are working close with the long term care homes and the Ministry to make sure we are providing the pubic health expertise and public support to all of these facilities,” he adds. ....

'More choices, more options': WECHU on mixing vaccines

WINDSOR, ONT.
Canada s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has changed its guidelines to allow for mixing and matching of COVID-19 vaccines.
“That could definitely give people more choices and more options,” says Dr. Wajid Ahmed, medical officer of health, Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
Federal health officials announced the updated guidance during a press briefing on Tuesday, with NACI recommending that a first dose of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine can safely be combined with a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna shots unless contraindicated.
NACI also advises that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines can be mixed for first and second doses as the mRNA technology is similar. ....

Windsor police seize imitation firearms, live ammunition following DIGS investigation

WINDSOR, ONT.
A Windsor police investigation into the suspected possession of illegal guns has resulted in multiple charges for a 23-year-old man.
The Windsor Police Service Drugs and Guns (DIGS) Unit launched an investigation and identified a suspect and involved residence and vehicle.
Around 1:15 p.m. Monday, police located the suspect in the 2700 block of Lynngrove Court where he was arrested without incident.
Officers from the DIGS Unit applied for and were granted search warrants for the Lynngrove residence as well as suspected vehicles.
The warrants were carried out at around 10:15 p.m. when officers found and seized three imitation firearms, a partially sawed off shotgun and various types and amounts of live ammunition from the home. ....

Strong turnout at 12+ pop up COVID-19 vaccine clinic in Lakeshore

LAKESHORE, ONT.
There was a large turnout with many ready to roll up their sleeves at a vaccination clinic targeted at youth in Lakeshore on Tuesday.
The pop-up clinic was open to children and youth 12 to 17 years of age and any family member 18 years and older who need their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
This clinic was walk-up only, no appointment required and ran until 7 p.m. Youth must be 12 years of age or older on the day of vaccination.
Marissa Heveans and her two sisters came to get their first dose at the Atlas Tube Centre with no objections. ....
