Windsor police investigate multiple scam reports involving senior residents

WINDSOR, ONT.
Windsor police are reminding the community to speak with their elderly loved ones about scams after receiving multiple reports.
Police are investigating scam reports from seniors who have been conned into purchasing gift cards and providing the PIN number to scammers.
The residents are told to ignore employees’ efforts to stop purchases and tell them they are gifts.
The Windsor Police Service website offers information on common scams and how to protect yourself and loved ones from becoming a victim.

Riverside Drive residents find 'Rethink the Trail' lawn signs knocked down

WINDSOR, ONT.
Several residents living on Riverside Drive in Tecumseh woke up to an unusual site Saturday morning.
A surveillance video showed an unknown person kicking over lawn signs that read “Rethink the Trail.”
Residents tell CTV News Ontario Provincial Police have collected video in the area.
OPP have yet to confirm.
The signs are part of an online campaign opposing a trail along Riverside Drive East that would connect Lesperance Road and Lakewood Park.
A second group called “Extend the Trail” was formed in favour of extending the Ganatchio Trail in Windsor to Tecumseh.
The trail is part of a 20-year active transportation plan to connect all seven municipalities across Windsor-Essex. ....

65 new COVID-19 cases, zero deaths reported in Windsor-Essex

WINDSOR, ONT.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 65 new cases of COVID-19 and no additional deaths on Sunday.
The death toll linked to COVID-19 has reached 413 people.
Windsor-Essex has had a total of 15,191 confirmed cases of the virus, including 14,296 people who have recovered.
Here’s the breakdown of new cases:
24 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases
6 cases are community acquired
1 case is outbreak related
34 cases are still under investigation.
WECHU says there are 482 active cases. There are 14 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the hospital and 4 people are in the ICU.
There’s been a total of 765 preliminary or confirmed Variant of Concern (VOC) cases identified in the region. ....

Family donates house and property to Windsor bereavement centre

WINDSOR, ONT.
Turning Julien’s House into a home of services for grieving parents is a step closer.
The Gaudet family signed papers to donate a house and property in memory of their 18-year-old son Julien on Friday, the day of his 28th birthday.
Julien died following an automotive related crash 10 years ago.
Following the tragedy, his parents created Julien Gaudet’s House a registered charity which offers free bereavement services.
The family decided to transform Julien’s first home into a safe and welcoming place to help others through their grief, and donated the acre of property along with the home and garage for session and healing services. ....

'X' marks the spot where Windsor is trying to improve urban tree cover

WINDSOR, ONT.
The City of Windsor’s forestry department hopes to plant 1,000 trees this spring; efforts that will begin in earnest on Monday morning.
“The tree nursery on Monday is going to be really bustling with lots of activity,” says Paul Giroux, the city’s forester.
They will be harvesting approximately 350 trees, tying them in burlap and wire mesh, to be shipped across the city for planting at various parks and new housing developments.
“We’re also gonna have a load of trees coming in from one of our partner nurseries so it’s gonna be really busy,” Giroux says. “Getting the nursery ready. Opening it up. Digging the trees out, getting them ready. And probably by the end of next week, we’ll have the tree planting program in full swing.” ....
