Sabah to do more in seed, plant revival initiatives, says state Agriculture Minister

He said these overlooked plants that are considered endemic to Sabah or have been around for generations in villages statewide have their own uses and benefits, and are at risk of extinction if they are not gathered, documented and preserved.
“Food and plant experts all over the world are busy competing to create super varieties including genetically modified organisms (GMO), but also many species of local plants and herbs that should be promoted as well,” he said. ....

What was your happiest moment recently? One spring day, I was delighted to receive indigenous seeds, including green and brown beans that the Korean Women Peasants Association sent me. When planted, the small beans will turn into roots, green leaves and then into a lot of beans in autumn. The seeds gave me courage and new energy, when I thought about their amazing possibilities and endless changes.
Those who are interested in planting native seeds in their gardens or pots can visit the website of the Korean Women Peasants Association and receive three or four kinds of seeds indigenous to Korea in spring after sending 10,000 won to support the organization. The money is used for female farmers to conserve native seeds. Last year, on our plot that we farm on weekends, my family and I grew red beans that I received from the organization, and they tasted very good. ....
