'We took the family for granted': Leaders grapple with Italy's accelerating birth crisis – Catholic World Report

Leaders in Italy’s public and private sectors will meet Friday to discuss the country’s dismal birth rate in a high-profile event including Pope Francis and Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
The country faces a demographic crisis, as experts predict that the already low European birth rate will be further affected by the coronavirus pandemic, which has already hit the Italian economy especially hard.
The situation “is no longer sustainable,” commented Gigi De Palo, president of the Family Associations Forum, the group organizing the March 14 event.
The association promotes pro-life and pro-family policies at the governmental level, and De Palo has been an outspoken advocate for relief of the Italian tax burden on families. ....

Fewer children behind Europe’s demographic imbalance
Europe is facing a serious demographic imbalance with the number of elderly people growing and a dwindling number of children. Two Catholic organizations organized a webinar on Monday to study the issue reflecting on the theme, “The Elderly and the Future of Europe”.

The problem of Europe’s demographic imbalance is not the growing number of its elderly people but the shortage of children and young people.  Hence the future of Europe lies in policies that support the family, where the elderly and children, along with others, create a network of families and communities based on intergenerational solidarity, sharing and dialogue.  This was underscored by participants in a conference on Monday, jointly hosted by the Federation of Catholic Family Associations in Europe (FAFCE) and the Commission of the Bishops Conferences of the European Union (COMECE).  ....
