Hontiveros pushes for maternity cash benefits for pregnant workers in informal sector
Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed a bill seeking maternity cash aid for pregnant workers in the informal sector to help boost the economy and improve the health of mothers and infants nationwide.
Hontiveros, Chair of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality, said Senate Bill No. 2175 or the Maternity Benefit for Women in the Informal Economy Act of 2021, will enhance the existing RA 11210 or Expanded Maternity Leave Law to require government to give out a direct maternity cash aid for all pregnant workers in the informal sector. ....

Philippines rank 1st in Asia, 16th globally in closing gender gap

QUEZON CITY, Mar. 9 (PIA) The Philippines ranked number 1 in Asia as the Most Gender Equal Nation and number 16 in the world in closing the gender gap at work based on the World Economic Forum Global Gender Report of 2020, Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque, Jr. said in a press briefing yesterday which was also the observance of International Women’s Day.
“Ang Pilipinas lang ang nag-iisang bansa [sa Asya] na nasa top 20. Ang sumunod na ay ang bansang Laos na nasa #43, (The Philippines is the only country [in Asia] to be included in the top 20 rankings followed by Laos at 43rd),” Roque said, emphasizing that this happened during the Duterte Administration. ....

Hontiveros: SSS rate hike suspension must not jeopardize maternity, other benefits

In particular, Hontiveros said maternity benefits under the Expanded Maternity Leave law, as well as the additional P1,000 for social pension for retired members should remain intact especially during this time of a pandemic.
“Sa panahon ngayon, kailangang-kailangan ng bawat manggagawa na may sasalo sa kanila (During this time, workers need some assurance). I understand why we need this measure, but I also want us to be sure that the benefits for the workers in the formal economy will not be jeopardized if the new contribution rates are deferred,” Hontiveros said in a statement. ....
