What do you know?

A co-worker who moved to Barbados a couple of months ago, told me about her cousin from overseas who’d recently visited her in Barbados. It was his first time there. Within a day of his arrival, her cousin borrowed her car. My co-worker sat beside him as he drove around the island. They eventually came to a roundabout and my co-worker instructed him to turn left.
“No,” he responded, “we’d better go right.”
My colleague pointed out
she was the one who lived here, but he was adamant. He
knew where he was going. He’d glanced at the map before they left the house. When it turned out to be the wrong road, he simply said: “I

Look out! How to avoid repeating mistakes

Why is it that we can so clearly see the mistakes of others, and yet repeat these same mistakes in our own lives?
I am convinced we are meant to learn from the experiences of others. Wisdom is the overriding theme of the book of Proverbs. In Proverbs we are repeatedly warned to avoid foolish behaviour. For instance, Proverbs chapter 4, verses 14 and 15 say:
“Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.”
Recently, in doing my devotions I came across a baffling account in 1 Samuel chapter 8 verses 1-3.

Three Life-changing Resolutions for 2021

Maybe, like me, you started 2021 with targets about what you wanted to achieve. Perhaps you’re now questioning your ability to reach the goals made about your health, fitness, finances and so on.
Are they really doable for this year? Have you been too ambitious? Do you have what it takes to see it through?
2020 taught us that life can go sideways fast. I had losses and wins in 2020. Midway through 2020, in the middle of a Covid-sparked national lockdown, I was intentional about the results I wanted in various aspects of my life, (chiefly: my writing, stress level, spiritual life, weight and relationships).

What a year! some suggestions for making it through – Part 2

In Part 1, I gave you some encouragement about ending the year well and how you can look forward to the next year with anticipation for great things. To pause and reflect is very valuable to enable us to move forward.
In Part 2 I suggest a few more ways to put a more positive spin on the bad things that may be happening in your life.
1.
Be thankful for the trouble and persecution in your life.
A preacher gave a challenging message recently based on these verses from 1 Peter chapter 4 verses 12 to 14, which said:
“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.”
