Volunteers clear 1.5 tonnes of garbage from forest stretch

Volunteers with the plastic and liquor bottles cleared from the stretch between Mangarai check-post and Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History near Anaikatti on Sunday.

Volunteers of Coimbatore-based Tamilnad Wildlife Organization (TWO) and Nature and Animal Conservancy removed 1.5 tonnes of garbage, mostly plastic bottles and liquor bottles, which were found strewn on the stretch between Mangarai and Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) on Anaikatti Road on Sunday.
N. Arunkumar, chairman of TWO, said that the volunteers had cleared garbage on the side of the road from Thaneerpandal pirivu to Managarai on December 20. ....

NGOs collect 1,000kg garbage fromAnaikatti Road | Coimbatore News


COIMBATORE: Members of non-governmental organizations Tamilnad Wildlife Organization and Nature and Animal Conservancy on Sunday collected 1,000kg garbage from the Anaikatti Road between Mangarai forest check post and Thaneerpandal near Chinna Thadagam.
The NGOs have been conducting the cleanliness drive every month. “During the drive on Anaikatti Road, which is frequented by wild elephants, we collected plastic bags, tumblers and liquor bottles. These might injure elephants and affect the environment. We collected only non-biodegradable items,” said Tamilnad Wildlife Organization chairman N Arun Kumar. “We handed over the garbage to Thadagam panchayat officials. Over 25 NGO members participated in the drive aimed at creating awareness.” ....
