Memorial ride held for man who died in incident with Headingley corrections officers

A memorial ride was held on Friday for William Walter Ahmo, an inmate at the Headingley Correctional Institution who died following an incident with corrections officers.
“We’re here today to honour William Ahmo and the family,” said Sagkeeng First Nation Chief Derrick Henderson.
CTV News Winnipeg previously reported that on Feb. 7, RCMP received a report of a 45-year-old inmate at Headingley who was unresponsive as a result of an incident with corrections officer. Ahmo died on Feb. 14.
RCMP are investigating the incident, and have not revealed the nature of the incident.
The memorial ride for Ahmo, who was a member of Sagkeeng, took place on Friday, Feb. 26 Aboriginal Justice Awareness Day. ....

William Walter Ahmo was born on Dec. 11, 1975 one month before me.
We had different lives, but they were intertwined.
His father, who died when he was two years old, was from Crane River, which is next to Peguis First Nation, where my family is from.
His mother comes from Sagkeeng and the well-known Fontaine family the same background as my daughter. The former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Phil Fontaine, is his uncle. ....

An inmate at the Headingley Correctional Centre who was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after an incident with corrections officers has died.
Sagkeeng First Nation Chief Derrick Henderson said 45-year-old William Walter Ahmo, a member of the First Nation and an inmate at the Headingley Correctional Centre, died on Sunday following an incident at the jail that put him in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
On February 7, RCMP said a 45-year-old inmate was reported to be unresponsive as a result of an incident with corrections officers. At the time, RCMP did not say how many officers were involved, or what the nature of the incident was. ....

An inmate from Headingley Correctional Centre has died after being injured in an incident with corrections officers a week ago.
The Manitoba RCMP says the 45-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries on February 7. Police were called to the correctional centre just before 7 p.m. for reports of an unresponsive male.
He was transported to hospital, and on February 14 he succumbed to his injuries.
Sagkeeng First Nation Chief Derrick Henderson confirms the man, William Walter Ahmo, was a member of the First Nation.
RCMP Major Crime Services has taken carriage of the investigation and is being assisted by RCMP Forensic Identification Services and Headingley RCMP, and continues to investigate. ....
