75k tenants dealing with deferred rent debts

A new report has raised concerns as to whether there has been enough support for tenants who lost their income in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The COVID-19 Rental Housing and Homelessness Impacts analysed the impacts of COVID-19 on the rental market and the government’s response to the crisis as part of a partnership between UNSW Sydney and the Australian Council of Social Services.
According to Australian Council of Social Services CEO Dr Cassandra Goldie, local and federal governments did the right thing in increasing support payments for existing tenants during the pandemic, which included putting in place eviction moratoriums and encouraging landlords to consider rent variations. ....

The lowest vacancy rate in decades in the Rockhampton region of below 2 per cent has contributed to escalating rents in the beef capital, local real estate agents say.
The extremely low vacancy rate in both Gladstone and Rockhampton is predicted to have dire consequences, forcing a significant increase in homeless people across CQ.
In December it was predicted 55.2 per cent of Central Queenslander’s would face housing stress post COVID, the highest figure in the nation.

'Significant proportion' of rough sleepers given shelter during Covid now homeless

A “remarkable” number of homeless people were placed in emergency accomodation at the height of the Covid pandemic but only a third of rough sleepers were later moved into long-term housing, a new report states.
The report, released on Thursday by University of New South Wales and the Australian Council of Social Service (Acoss), argues many of those housed in emergency shelters during the pandemic are now homeless again due to a lack of social housing stock.
Drawing on unpublished data from NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, researchers found that between mid-March and the end of September 2020 emergency accommodation was provided to more than 40,000 people, a figure described as “remarkable”. ....
