Reps task INEC to restore 8 State Constituencies in Oyo

The House of Representatives on Wednesday mandated Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to obey the Court injunction on the restoration of eight state Constituencies across Oyo State, namely: Ibadan North III, Ibadan South-West III, Ibarapa Central, Irepo, Itesiwaju, Oyo East, Saki East and Surulere.
The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion jointly sponsored by Hon. Odebunmi Olusegun Dokun, Rep. Akeem Adeyemi, Hon. Olajide Olatunbosun, Hon. Ojerinde Olumide and Hon. Olaide Akinremi, who underscored the need for the operation of the eight State Constituencies to take effect in the succeeding State House of Assembly election under the provision of section 115 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). ....

On Tuesday, the National Assembly will resume from its Christmas vacation to attend to pressing national issues, including the outstanding bills, writes Udora Orizu
The two chambers of the National Assembly, which have been on Christmas break since December 22 2020, will resume plenary on Tuesday, February 9 for the commencement of the 2021 legislative calendar.
The lawmakers, who were initially billed to resume plenary on Tuesday, January 26th postponed their resumption by two weeks to enable federal lawmakers belonging to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) participate in the revalidation of their membership of the party with effect from January 25, 2021.
Upon resumption, the Ninth Assembly members are expected to continue their legislative duties and tend to crucial bills, which they have promised to prioritise in their legislative agenda. ....

NASS begins legislation to enforce use of card readers in every election

Use of card readers for electoral activities in each of the 119,973 polling units in Nigeria is to be made compulsory in every elections, going by new provisions being made by the National Assembly in the new Electoral Act.
This is as the federal lawmakers on Wednesday in Abuja vowed to complete legislative work on the Electoral Act amendment before the end of first quarter in 2021.
Explaining the new provisions in the Act, the Chairman, House Committee on Electoral Matters, Hon Aishatu Jibril Dukku, at a joint public hearing held on the two different legislations being worked upon for conduct of future elections in the country, said the new provisions are contained in the amendments being made on section 49 of the 2010 Electoral Act. ....
