The tide has yet to turn in favour of water meters in New Plymouth.
On day three of the New Plymouth District Council hearings on its draft $3 billion 10-year spending plan, there was little support for one of the most controversial ideas – the introduction of water meters to 26,000 homes.
If approved, the $18 million installation job would start in July.
Real bills won’t start arriving for a year, with residents only receiving mock bills while they get used to having to watch their water use.

New Plymouth's $18m water meter plan still to be approved - council begins hiring process anyway

Public submissions on the draft long-term plan, which covers the 10 years to 2031, closed on April 6, and final council sign-off is needed by June 30.
Water meters are a controversial component of the plan, and though there is strong support among councillors for the proposal, councillor Dinnie Moeahu has expressed concerns about the idea and the Waitara Community Board is opposed to it.
However, the council appears to be expecting water meters to be approved, as on Monday it began advertising for a senior infrastructure project manager – universal water metering.
According to the advert, the successful candidate for the three-year, full-time job “will be the ‘face’ of the project and be able to bring together and lead a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts across council business units”. ....

Water meters have been proposed in the New Plymouth District’s latest 10-year spending plan.
Inglewood is fine with water meters, Waitara isn’t, while Clifton wants a new boat ramp at Tongapōrutu and Kaitake is chasing more money for its water networks.
Submissions have closed on the New Plymouth District Council’s draft long term plan and the district’s four community boards have all contributed their thoughts in writing.
Whether their lists of wants and suggestions is heeded by the council will not be known until the end of June, when the 10-year-spending plan is signed off. ....
