Police have removed a controversial web-tracking tool called Facebook Pixel from their website after a member of the public went to the media with his concerns.
Last week, the NZ Council for Civil Liberties (NZCCL) released a media statement highlighting concerns from PhD researcher Kent Newman who discovered that some government agencies, including the Police, were using tracking tools such as Facebook Pixel on their websites without disclosing this to the public.
A Police spokesperson said they reviewed the use of Facebook Pixel following NZCCL’s media statement and subsequent media enquiries.
“The Facebook Pixel was set up in 2016 to support the constabulary recruitment campaign. However, New Zealand Police has not used the Facebook Pixel for this campaign for over 18 months and it has now been deleted. Police has no intention currently of re-enabling this tool. A huge concrete pour is coming up soon on the massive new Omāroro reservoir in Brooklyn.
The new reservoir will replace the existing reservoir with a new seismically resilient structure in Prince of Wales Park in the Town Belt, and new resilient pipes.
Wellington Water community liaison Dan Ormond said things have been working to schedule.
“Since June 2020 things have progressed very smoothly and on schedule with the development of the new 35 million-litre buried concrete Omāroro reservoir.”
The excavation for the new reservoir is complete and crews are working to prepare the base, he said. ....

Another Wellington regional councillor is calling for the private sector to get out of public transport, but most are refusing to commit either way. This comes in the same week as the government released a discussion paper that explored different potential ownership models, although it stopped short of considering full public ownership.
Last week the deputy-chair of the regional council’s transport committee David Lee called on the government to allow regional councils to bring bus services back in-house. Committee chair Roger Blakeley agreed it was something the government should consider.
Scoop asked the eleven other regional councillors whether they agreed with Lee, but only Thomas Nash responded. ....
