Mall, Avenue Living warming hearts with coat drive

The Wetaskiwin Mall and Avenue Living are helping those in need stay warm this winter.
For the second year, the Mall and its parent company Avenue Living are hosting the Warm Hearts Coat Drive.

Last year, 35 coats were purchased for men, women and children from local retailers then distributed at the mall.
This year, organizers are doing things a little differently to ensure those who need coats, mitts and touques get what they need.
To determine community members in need, Wetaskiwin Mall is enlisting the help of local community support agencies. Individuals who access support through these agencies will qualify for a voucher, which can be exchanged for one coat, hat and one pair of gloves. A limited number of these items will be handed out on a first-come-first-serve basis to those with vouchers. ....

Wetaskiwin shoppers will see new life breathed into the Wetaskiwin Mall this year.
Ben Volorney, principal with Avison Young, said his company has been working with the Mall on a plan to see additional retailers and medical services brought into the space.

“We want to reposition the property,” he said. “These malls that were built 40 years ago were built as community hubs and we want to bring that back.”
With Alberta Health Services relocating Home Care from the Wetaskiwin and District Hospital and Care Centre last year Volorney said they plan to bring in other medical services as the mall is more accessible and has a larger parking area that would make coming to the Mall for some medical appointments easier and more convenient for people. ....

City Santa Claus parade still going ahead

The Wetaskiwin Fire Dept.’s 9th Annual Santa Claus Parade is still going ahead on Dec. 19 at 6 p.m., but there are some additional restrictions.
Due to the recently announced provincial ban on all outdoor gatherings, spectators will need to remain inside their vehicles while watching the parade along the route and the photo op with a fire truck originally planned following the parade has been cancelled.
