Twelve percent of those who received the National Arts Council (NAC) of South Africa grant funding were collectively paid more than R128-million, which equates to 46% of the funding. In contrast the remaining 1142 recipients divided R150-million amongst themselves. 
A report into the NAC’s Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) grant funding, compiled by the South African Roadies Association (Sara) has highlighted alleged conflicts of interest and maladministration in the awarding of the grants. ....

'We will sit both sides around the table' - Public Protector intervenes in artists and NAC impasse


Last week, advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane met with the two parties respectively. 
Since then Public Protector South Africa announced plans to mediate between artists and the National Arts Council. The Public Protector argued that if the council had implemented remedial action last year, they would not be in this predicament. 
On Wednesday, 28 April 2021, the Public Protector South Africa announced its plans to mediate in the two-month-long dispute between artists and the National Arts Council and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture. 
Since 3 March 2021, artists have been staging a sit-in at the NAC offices in Johannesburg. This, after they reached out to the council asking them for details on what went wrong with the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP) which the government had encouraged artists to apply for in October of 2020. ....

NAC serves artists with eviction order

South African artists have been given marching orders.
ARTISTS who have been staging a sit-in at the National Arts Council have been given marching orders.
An eviction order was granted on Friday, 9 April by the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Local Division.
According to the eviction order, the artists are supposed to evict the building with immediate effect.
Part of the order reads: “Pending the finalisation of any and all disputes pertaining to the implementation of the President Employment Stimulus Programme, the respondents be directed and interdicted to immediately upon service of this order to exit and vacate the premises and offices of the applicant. Not to approach, traverse or be present on the property and premises of the applicant, not to approach and or be present near any are of the property where any works are attended to by the applica ....
