People illegally dumping pet turtles isn’t a new phenomenon, but with only a few populations knowingly breeding offspring successfully in the wild so far, experts fear high temperatures could turn the reptile into a major threat. A new breeding population was recently discovered in ponds at Cooks Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Red-eared slider turtles have long been considered one of the world’s worst invasive species, but were allowed to be sold in New Zealand pet stores because it was thought the New Zealand climate was too cold for their eggs to successfully incubate and hatch. ....
