THE Department of Mineral Resources is concerned about the legal cases against mining company, Vantage Goldfields.
Department officials and former mine workers visited the families of Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyirenda and Yvonne Mnisi on Thursday, 25 February, to give them updates on the latest developments. Mthokozisi Zondi, deputy chief inspector of mines, told Daily Sun the families and former workers agreed to meet frequently after a meeting in September to get updates on the business rescue process. ....

Five years after the collapse of a support pillar that took the lives of three workers at Vantage Goldfields’ Lily mine in Mpumalanga, thereâs light at the end of the tunnel for the company. The 2016 tragedy brought an end to mining operations at Lily and its sister mine, Barbrook, which were then placed in business rescue.
The bodies of Solomon Nyirenda, Yvonne Mnisi and Pretty Nkambule remain buried a Lily mine, and the only way to recover them is to sink a new decline shaft 50 metres below the surface to recover the container in which they were working at the time of the collapse. ....

NATIONAL NEWS - There is a glimmer of hope for ex-Lily and Barbrook mine employees, according to Vantage Goldfields CEO, Mike McChesney.
This is nearly four years since the tragedy in which four miners’ bodies were entombed after a shaft collapsed on February 5, 2016.
Since then, the mine closed and was placed under business rescue as rescue operations were abandoned. A drawn-out court case between potential buyers and Arqomanzi Proprietary Limited continued.

The former employees, led by Harry Mazibuko, camped outside the mine for more than 500 days to draw attention to the plight of the families of Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyirenda and Yvonne Mnisi, who are believed to have perished in the container that plunged more than 70 metres underground. ....
