'Parkinson's disease saw me change from suckler farming to calf-to-beef'

A Co. Cork farmer with Parkinson’s disease is upbeat about living with the fastest-growing neurological disease worldwide, despite having to change from suckler farming to a calf-to-beef enterprise because of the condition.
“Before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease I was a suckler farmer but due to the physical demands of suckling, eight years after diagnosis I reluctantly switched to a calf-to-beef enterprise on my 50ac holding, located at Riverstick, between Cork Airport and Kinsale in south Cork,” said Ted Horgan.
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects predominantly dopamine producing neurons in a specific area of the brain, the substantia nigra. The cause remains largely unknown. ....

15 teams are set to compete in the next SFI Future Innovator Prize programmes, with projects focused on ocean health, sustainable batteries and more.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris, TD, has announced 15 teams shortlisted for two Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Future Innovator Prize programmes.
The challenge-based funding programme was first launched in 2018, calling on researchers to address major societal problems, such as the climate crisis, through disruptive STEM solutions. The first Future Innovator Prize was awarded last year to Dr Alison Liddy of NUI Galway, for the Hydrobloc project to treat chronic pain. ....
