Local organisations have been mobilising to carry out various activities at emergency shelters in the hopes of making the lives of evacuees a little more stress-free and comfortable.

STEM St Vincent and the Grenadines (STEM SVG) is no exception.
The organisation, whose aim is to expose young people to technological and other learning experiences, began implementing science and introductory information technology sessions for the displaced children at the Buccament Bay Secondary School shelter in mid-April.
“I really like the idea of touching base with this cohort of children and as I normally say in the stem programme, they are all intelligent children, they just need that exposure…they are willing to learn, they are interested in learning,” Petrus Gumbs, the founder and director of STEM SVG told SEARCHLIGHT this week. ....

SMSS looks out to its displaced students
Teachers and volunteers at the SMSS have been working ‘round the clock’ to prepare relief packages for displaced student and their families.

There are twenty-five students of the St Martin’s Secondary School and their families, all from the Red Zone, who were evacuated as a result of the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano, which began on April 9.
Those students and their families are not forgotten.
In an interview with Mr. Yohance Gibson, Principal of the St. Martin’s Secondary School, THE VINCENTIAN learned that by February, 2021, with the possibility of an eruption looming large, the school’s counsellor, Mrs. Lucy Theobalds, had already contacted the twenty-one families living in the Red Zone, and developed an evacuation plan for each household.  Further data revealed that four other families lived within the Orange Zone. ....
