Lions Gate traffic: Lane closures coming as bridge's counterflow lane undergoes upgrades

VANCOUVER
Overnight lane closures of the Lions Gate Bridge will begin in June to allow for upgrades to the counterflow lane.
The work starts mid-month and runs until mid-November on the bridge that connects downtown Vancouver and the North Shore, says the Ministry of Transportation in a news release. The lane closures will mainly run from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday to Thursday but that could change depending on the work being done, says the release.
Approximately 60,000 drivers use the Lions Gate every day and the counterflow lanes help reduce travel times during rush hour.
The news release says the $4.7-million project includes modernizing the signal heads on the Stanley Park Causeway and the Lions Gate Bridge to LED lane-control signals, as well as an upgrade of the software that operates the counterflow system. ....

Lions Gate Bridge counterflow system to undergo upgrade

Installation work will begin in the middle of June, and drivers can expect lane closures from 11 pm to 6 am from Sunday to Thursday. This activity is expected to continue through the middle of November of this year.
According to a release, an effort will be made to minimize disruptions to peak period traffic and public transit bus services. About 60,000 vehicles cross the Lions Gate Bridge on an average day, and the three-lane bridge’s peak flow capacity depends on the use of the counterflow system to activate two lanes for the peak direction.
The cost of the upgrade to ensure the counterflow system’s long-term reliability is $4.7 million. ....

For the first phase, by the middle of May, the system of cones and other traffic management equipment will be re-established from Pipeline Road to Second Beach, with parking lot entrances, access to the Stanley Park Causeway, and intersections unaffected a significant change from the controversial configuration for 2020. There will be signage and traffic management techniques to direct vehicles and cyclists through these areas.
The seawall will remain open for cyclists to provide them with the option to ride on either the seawall or Stanley Park Drive.

Then by the middle of May, during the second phase, Park Board staff will consider changes to the segment of Stanley Park Drive from the roundabout (intersection of North Lagoon Drive, Stanley Park Drive, and Pipeline Road South) to Pipeline Road.
