One of Australia’s big three energy utilities, EnergyAustralia, says it appointed chief customer officer Mark Collette as its new managing director, effective July 1, following the decision by Catherine Tanna to retire after seven years at the helm.
It is third departure of a CEO from a major coal generator in little more than a week, following the surprising exit of Brett Redman from AGL in the middle of its demerger plans, and the sudden exit of Ricard van Breda from Stanwell Corp in Queensland after he talked of a possible early closure of some of its coal units. ....

The full truth of the departure of Richard Van Breda as chief executive of the Queensland government-owned Stanwell Corporation is yet to emerge. But he appears to have fallen victim one way or another to another outbreak of climate and culture war politics.

Origin Energy is understood to have opted to cut back generation at its huge coal power station in NSW in favour of buying cheap electricity from the wholesale market early this year in an example of the responses by traditional generators to the soft demand and prices plaguing the sector.
The approach by Origin, which partly explains the drop in the running rate of Eraring noted in the Australian Energy Market Operatorâs March quarter report, would result in cost savings as it took advantage of lower prices to buy from the pool rather than running its own, higher-cost plant. ....
