Gas flares, oil spills worsen climate change in Niger Delta communities


The development is creating apprehension among communities, who are apparently worried about their survival in the region.

Some manifestations of the climate change crisis triggered by gas flaring and oil spills include, the disappearance of wildlife, fishes in rivers, creeks and fresh waters of the Delta, excessive heat, shrinking vegetation, especially of economic trees like palm trees, oranges, mangoes, pears, plantain and banana.
A recent visit to Kwale, a community in Ndokwa West Council of Delta State, revealed that the area, which is surrounded by about 10 flaring racks operated by oil majors such as Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC), Pillar Oil Limited, Energia Oil Limited, Mid-Western Oil Limited, Sterling Global Limited’s Liquefied Natural Gas Plant, has become a furnace of sorts. ....

Waltersmith Partners UNIDO, UNECA on Industrial Park in Imo Community

Waltersmith Petroman Nigeria Limited, one of the indigenous oil companies to build a modular refinery in Nigeria, is to build an industrial park in Ohaji/Egbema local government, its host community of Imo state.
Also in line with its corporate social responsibilities, Waltersmith has advanced plans to employ 47 youths of Ohaji/Egbema who had undergone six months technical skills acquisition programme which was organised by the company.
The project is being undertaken with support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
Chief Executive Officer of Waltersmith Petroman Company, Mr. Chikezie Nwosu, disclosed this at the closing ceremony of Waltersmith Technical Skills Acquisition Programme, 2021 for some graduates of Ohaji/Egbema local government area of Imo state. ....

Some indigenes of Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State have written to the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, over alleged diversion of a road project meant for the area.
The indigenes claimed that the project, the Ossomala-Ogwu Ikpele-Ase-Ndoni Road was seen on a project board being executed in Onitsha metropolis.
In a letter titled “Letter of Complaint Concerning Suspected Shady Deals on the Ossomala-Ogwu Ikpele-Ase-Ndoni Road, Ogbaru LGA, Anambra state,” authored by Akaka Ikechukwu Emmanuel, Esq, and copied to Senator Stella Oduah and the member, representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chukwuka Onyema, the indigenes which referred to themselves as “concerned indigenes” called for thorough investigation to ascertain reasons for the alleged diversion, the current stage of the project and funds so far releas ....
