Canal & River Trust give Stroudwater swing-bridge a make over

THE historic Stroudwater swing-bridge at Saul Junction has received a make-over from the Canal & River Trust.
Installed in 1886, the bridge crosses the Stroudwater Navigation at Saul, and is the last of its kind on that waterway.
It sits where the Stroudwater Canal meets the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, forming an unusual `canal crossroads` feature.
The work was carried out by RW Davis Boatyard at Saul Junction, who specialise in the restoration of historic vessels.
Works to the bridge included: repairs to and replacement of the timberwork; cleaning and re-painting of the iron railings and re-alignment of the bridge to swing correctly. ....

NOSTALGIA: Messing about in the water on the Stroudwater Canal

THE first of this week s nostalgia photos shows a sunny, carefree scene of Wycliffe College students swimming and canoeing by the college’s former boat house, in 1926.
The boat house was located beside the Stroudwater Canal near Stonehouse, close to Upper Mills Bridge. It fell into disrepair after the canal became unnavigable.
Wycliffe College now have a boat house at Saul Junction, on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.
The second photo shows a group of industrious lads, learning carpentry skills at a woodwork class at Brimscombe Polytechnic.
Both images are part of the Museum in the Park’s Wilf Merrett Postcard Collection. ....
