EXTREME WEATHER: Deep Depression likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Met Department issued an advisory for the Deep Depression in the East Central Bay of Bengal.
The depression located in East Central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and lay centered near latitude 16.3N longitude 89.7E, on 23rd May around 11.30 p.m.
This system is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by 24th and further into a severe cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and reach near west Bengal coasts around 26th May.
Sudden roughness of the sea associated with strong winds (50-60 kmph, up to 70-80 kmph gusty wind at times) during thundershowers is expected over the North Andaman sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal and deep-sea area of southwest Bay of Bengal during next few days. ....

COLOMBO (News 1st); 17 people were hospitalized after they were struck by ligthning in Kotagala, Hatton on Sunday (23).
District Medical Officer Savithri Sharma speaking to News 1st said estate workers attached to a tea estate were thus injured in the incident.
Sri Lanka’s Met Department warned that the low pressure area in the East-central Bay of Bengal has intensify in to Depression. Under the influence of the this system, winds over the island and rainy condition in southwestern part (Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces) is expected to enhance from 24nd May to 26th May, 2021 ....

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center has warned that the water levels of the Gin, Kalu, and Nilwala rivers are rising following heavy rains experienced in the area.
Disaster Management Centre Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili said people living on the banks of these rivers must pay extra attention to flash floods and urged the people to follow the instructions given by the DMC.
According to the Irrigation Department, water levels of the Kukule Ganga and Kuda Ganga are rising following heavy rains experienced in the Kalu Ganga river basin areas. ....
